| 32 | NOTES: "Represented left to right are the oil wood tanker PENROSE and any one of several 5-masted barkentines that were down here - minus a couple of masts - the ship OCCIDENTAL - and in the foreground the MARY QUINBY."...Excerpt from a letter from Mr. Noble, December, 1972. NOTES: HEART OF THE BONEYARD A boy has swum out to a cluster of hulks and somehow with hazard has managed to board them: and he now looks in awe across across of strange and obsolete wooden naval architecture. Such a boy did his swimming and wondering 25 to 35 years ago in Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, New York, the Maine Coast and to hulks and groups of hulks laying in lonely mud flats God knows where. Though he may be graying at the temples now, a feeling for some of the greatest wooden constructions of man never left him and occasionally he has become a collector. Most of my lithographs are more or less concepts of typical vessels. This is, however, an actual scene. Thirty-two years or so ago, I had my easel set up in the heart of the old Port Johnson boneyard, a Sargasso Sea of dead ships, far from any living person. The largest wooden graveyard of the East Coast. A group of boys swam out and boarded by way of a schooner’s bob chains. One of these boys who had never been there before took this pose naturally. The end result was a bad painting which has deservedly been collecting dust all these years. Recently I did a charcoal drawing of it and decided to use the composition for my next lithograph. Standing on the deck of an 1899 schooner, the boy surveys a Maine full-rigged ship hulk of 1874 – a 5-masted barkentine (couple of masts missing) and the weird burnt sides of a tremendous wooden oil tanker of World War I, one of the biggest ever built. A boy of course can still swim out to certain old vessels today, but the older hulks of the age of sail have mostly turned to dust. The paneled structure on the right is the schooner’s coach – that is the forward entrance to the after cabin. This was the entrance used by mate and steward – and here they hung their oilskins in bad weather. Oddly it retained its white paint and glowed for many years like a marble mausoleum in this expanse of gray rotting decks. VESSEL INFORMATION - VESSEL NAME: MARY T. | 33 | No image URL. | Norddeutscher Lloyd–Records and correspondence. | Steamboat lines–Germany.; Transatlantic voyages.; Passenger ships. | The collection consists of two notebooks kept by Captain Drechsel in his capacity as Marine Superintendent at the North German Lloyd docks, Piers 84 and 86 on Manhattan's west side between 44th and 46th Streets. They are records of every NGL ship to arrive and depart between 1934 and 1939, as well as a few vessels and airplanes that were not company liners. One such entry noted Queen Mary's maiden voyage. The entries pairing airplanes with steamships are not at present understood. Had war not broken out, these notebooks might have been preserved in North German Lloyd's company archives. At the very end, Drechsel writes in blue pencil at the top of a page that war has broken out. The date was September 3, 1939. | MS0798 |
